Project overview

Dementia care home concept

Project description

The project in detail.

A domestic scale for residential care

The working brief explores twenty-four bedrooms in two connected groups of twelve, each with shared living and dining spaces and access to a garden. An assumed 0.80-hectare site and approximately 1,400 square metres of gross internal floor area provide a starting point for the study. An operator's care model and room schedule would determine the actual accommodation requirement.

A sheltered courtyard

The architectural direction combines low buff brick pavilions, pale metal pitched roofs and timber soffits. A covered garden walk frames the courtyard and provides sheltered places to sit. Planting, raised beds and recognisable landmarks are explored alongside clear routes between shared rooms and outdoor space.

Developing the care brief

Further work would involve an operator and appropriate specialists to test accessibility, observation, staffing, security, servicing and the fire strategy. The concept's garden and domestic character are design intentions, not evidence of clinical outcomes or regulatory compliance.

A question for the local area

The study offers a starting point for discussing the type of care accommodation that may be needed locally. It does not claim an evidenced shortage of care beds in Middlesbrough or support from commissioners or planning officers.

Concept status

Orchard Gardens is a self-initiated illustrative study by Hepburn Architects. It is not an operating care home, a client commission or a submitted or approved C2 development.
