A contemporary extension and external remodelling project that transforms a substantial detached home through improved proportions, natural materials and a refined modern façade.

A rear extension and internal renovation transformed the ground floor of this Harborne home, bringing the kitchen, dining and living spaces together and creating a stronger connection to the garden. Hepburn Architects provided architectural design, planning and technical design. The project combined additional space with changes to the existing layout, using rooflights and full-height glazing to bring daylight into the home.

Rear and Side Extension with Loft Conversion in Birmingham
Edgbaston contains substantial period properties, mature gardens, estate-managed areas and several conservation-sensitive streets. Proposals often require a careful response to heritage significance, trees, boundary treatments, neighbouring amenity and the scale of the original building.
Hepburn Architects can support the project from early feasibility and planning strategy through to Building Regulations drawings and consultant coordination. The appointment is tailored to the property, approval route and information already available.

Reorganise rooms, circulation and services around how you live, coordinating internal changes with the existing structure and any proposed extension.
Original character, significance, materials, trees and the wider street are treated as design inputs rather than late constraints.

Edgbaston includes several conservation areas and part of the main Edgbaston Conservation Area is covered by an Article 4 Direction. Properties on the Calthorpe Estate may also require separate estate consent in addition to statutory approvals.
The answer depends on the proposal, planning history and local controls. Conservation-area status, Article 4 restrictions, listed status and estate covenants can all affect the approval route.
No. Estate consent is a separate private approval and does not replace planning permission, listed building consent or Building Regulations approval where those are required.
Trees within conservation areas are protected, and some trees are also subject to Tree Preservation Orders. Tree constraints should be assessed before the footprint and access strategy are fixed.
Yes. We can assess the planning history, character, landscape, access and development potential before preparing a design and planning strategy.
