Contemporary Farmhouse Extension

Project overview

This project involved the design of a substantial contemporary extension to an existing traditional farmhouse.

The proposal creates a clear architectural contrast between the original rural property and the new addition. Dark vertical cladding gives the extension a refined, understated appearance, while the simple form allows the original farmhouse to remain visually distinct.

Large areas of ground-floor glazing connect the new kitchen, dining and living spaces with the surrounding garden. Sliding doors open directly onto a generous terrace, allowing the internal accommodation to extend outdoors and improving the relationship between the house and its rural setting.

The extension was designed to provide flexible, light-filled family accommodation while respecting the character and proportions of the existing farmhouse. Carefully positioned openings, recessed glazing and restrained detailing help the new work feel contemporary without competing with the original building.

The completed design brings together traditional rural architecture and modern materials to create a practical, distinctive and comfortable family home.

Design approach

The design approach was based on creating a contemporary addition that would remain clearly legible from the original farmhouse.

Rather than attempting to replicate the existing architecture, the extension uses a restrained modern material palette and simplified detailing. The darker cladding allows the new volume to sit comfortably against the surrounding landscape, while the extensive glazing introduces natural light and frames views across the garden.

The internal layout was reorganised around an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, creating a stronger connection between the farmhouse and its outdoor areas.
