Project description

The project in detail.

Project overview

This project involved the transformation of a substantial family home in Newcastle through a contemporary rear extension, internal remodelling and carefully integrated upper-floor alterations.

At ground-floor level, the extension creates a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space extending across the rear of the property. Wide areas of full-height glazing bring natural light deep into the plan and provide uninterrupted views across the garden.

Slim-framed sliding doors open onto a broad terrace, allowing the principal living spaces to connect directly with the landscaped grounds. The simple rendered form and minimal parapet detailing give the extension a calm, contemporary appearance while complementing the proportions of the existing house.

Alterations at first-floor and roof level introduce additional accommodation and larger glazed openings without overwhelming the original building. The new elements are carefully aligned to create a balanced rear elevation and a coherent relationship between the existing house and the contemporary additions.

The completed design provides a bright, flexible family home with improved circulation, stronger garden connections and a refined architectural character.

Design approach

The design focused on creating a clear and well-proportioned rear elevation while significantly improving the quality of the internal accommodation.

The ground floor was opened up to form a series of connected kitchen, dining and living areas arranged around views of the garden. Large glazed openings reduce the visual separation between inside and outside, while the deep terrace provides a natural extension of the internal living space.

A restrained palette of light render, dark aluminium framing and minimal detailing allows the new work to feel contemporary while remaining compatible with the existing property.
