Project description

The project in detail.

Project overview

This project involved the transformation of an existing family home through a contemporary rear extension and carefully considered upper-floor alterations.

At ground-floor level, the new extension creates a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space overlooking the rear garden. Full-height glazing and slim-framed sliding doors bring natural light deep into the property and provide a seamless connection between the interior, terrace and landscaped garden.

The extension is expressed as a simple, refined pavilion with a slender roof profile and warm timber detailing. This creates a calm contrast with the original rendered house while allowing the new work to remain visually lightweight.

The upper floor was also remodelled to improve the internal layout and introduce a contemporary rear addition with a large picture window. This provides improved daylight, framed garden views and additional usable accommodation.

The completed design balances modern family living with a sensitive response to the scale and character of the existing house.

Design approach

The design focused on opening the rear of the property to the garden while maintaining a clear relationship between the original house and the new intervention.

A restrained material palette of glass, timber and dark metal framing gives the extension a contemporary appearance without overwhelming the existing building. Large glazed openings maximise daylight and views, while the roof overhang provides depth, weather protection and solar shading.

The garden was treated as an extension of the internal living space, with a raised terrace, wide steps and a direct visual route through the house.
