A stone rear-extension proposal exploring a kitchen and dining wing for a country cottage. Briar Cottage pairs coursed stone and a slate pitched roof with sage-grey joinery, creating a garden-facing room with a quiet, traditional character.

The project in detail.
Working with the cottage character
The study uses a lower stone wing to extend the living accommodation while keeping the main cottage visually prominent. Coursed walling, substantial lintels and a simple slate gable explore how the new addition could share the material character of the original house.
A kitchen within the garden setting
The garden-facing doors and adjacent windows frame views of the planting and terrace. The design brings cooking and dining together in a single room, with a sheltered outdoor sitting area alongside the wing. Painted joinery adds a gentle contrast to the stonework.
Developing the construction approach
Further work would establish the condition and construction of the existing cottage, the floor levels and the most useful connection between old and new rooms. Stone selection, mortar, roof abutments and moisture management would need careful development alongside the internal arrangement and any heritage considerations identified for a real property.
